Petite Messe Solennelle
Gioacchino Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle was written in 1863, 'the last', the composer called it, of my 'péchés de vieillesse' (sins of old age). For its first performance (1864) Rossini arranged the work with only two pianos and harmonium. Partly for fear that it would be done anyway after his death, Rossini discreetly orchestrated the Petite Messe Solennelle during 1866-67, without losing its candor and subtlety. The resulting version had its first public performance on 28 February 1869, three months after the composer's death.

The virtuosity of Polish violinist Adam Baldych enables him to pass with astonishing ease through all kinds of borders: the boundaries of his instrument, the barriers between genres, the seams between composing and improvising.

The first, Alfredo Rodriguez, after classical training, discovered the world of jazz and improvisation by listening to Keith Jarrett.Today he is Quincy Jones's preferred pianist. The second, Pedrito Martinez, congaceros (percussionnist) comes from the streets of Havana making the whole of New York dance at Ginny's, the epicentre of Cuban Santeria. These two great jazz hopes meet each other at last and hold high the torch of the new uninhibited Latin-jazz scene where their virtuoso and audacious playing and their volcanic energy is put to the service of adventurous writing for a unique and fascinating voyage.

Christian McBride's New Jawn - Malta Jazz Festival
Christian McBride's New Jawn
Christian McBride,leader/bass
Nasheet Waits, drums
Marcus Strickland, sax tenor
Josh Evans, trumpet
Powered by a relentless energy and a boundless love of swing, Christian McBride's path has described a continuous positive arc since his arrival on the scene. With a career now blazing into its third decade, the Philadelphia native has become one of the most requested, most recorded, and most respected figures in the music world today. His latest grouping, Christian McBride's New Jawn, is a killer unit, tight, soulful, in the pocket and in the groove. By the way, Jawn is Philly slang to describe just about everything and anything, but most importantly to understand why McBride named his new band so, it is probably this: 'Jawn' is one Philly thing New York can't lay claim to'.
