Con Brio - Jazz à Vienne
Con Brio Ziek McCarter, vocal Brendan Liu, trumpet Marcus Stephens, saxopone Benjamin Andrews, guitar Patrick Glynn, keyboard Jonathan Kirchner, bass Andrew Laubacher, percussion Seven musicians formed Con Brio in 2003 with the same passion for the Bay Area's signature funk and psychedelic soul. San Francisco is where Sly and The Family Stone, Tower Of Power, The Headhunters and Darondo flourished. Con Brio produced their first EP, Kiss The Sun, in 2015 and are already famous on the West Coast for their electric concerts and Ziek McCarter's velvety vocals. After touring the US and Europe alongside veterans Galactic and Fishbone, the Californians headed to the studio to put their buzzing live energy on record in 2016. The result is called Paradise, an album in which 'We tried to create a narrative arc in the same way as we link tracks when we play live,' says McCarter. She was born in Los Angeles and later moved to Paris. She released her first single, 'Time' (1996), at the age of 16. Her first albums brought her success and fame in France on the soul and pop scene. In addition to her career as a singer and backing vocalist, she also works as a host at Radio Nova and MTV in France. In 2008, she launched her own production company, MadeInChina Productions. In 2009, she released an album called This One's for Dinah (Blue Note France), a tribute to Dinah Washington. Her next album, Crazy Blues, was named by British newspaper The Times as one of the top 100 albums of 2013. At the end of March 2017, she released her long-awaited new album, Nightintales. China co-hosted and sang at the first UNESCO International Jazz Day in Paris, and she also often performs concerts for US UNESCO. Jazz trumpeter, composer, arranger, conductor and Stanford University graduate Tom Harrell is often described as a 'pure melodic genius'. Apart from his 27 albums and hundreds of concerts as a frontman, the Illinois-born trumpeter has worked with the greatest names in jazz. He is on tour this year with an innovative sextet, 'Colors of a Dream', refining even further the 'piano-less' concept: a trumpet, two saxophones, two basses (one of them also a singer) and drums. We have Wayne Escoffery, Ugonna Okegwo and Jonathan Blake, three regular members of his quintet, and two newcomers: alto saxophonist Jaleel Shaw and the mesmerizing Esperanza Spalding playing bass and singing.
